Rightly dividing the Word of Truth ~ Part One
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15
A sincere student of the scriptures should read the Word of God independent of any and all denominational teachings. If you read the Word of God through the prism of a popular denomination or belief system then that is the theology you will accept as truth.
When Paul instructed Timothy to study to show himself approved unto God, he had the scriptures in mind, seeing as how Paul used the terminology the word of truth which would be the Word of God.
In the second epistle of Peter the scriptures states; Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:20-21
So, God does not give us the right or authority to have our own personal interpretation of the scriptures.
Peter makes a bold statement in 2 Peter 1:16-19
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Peter was exalting the scriptures which is the Word of God above his vision and experience in the holy mount where he saw Jesus transfigured and talking to Moses and Elijah.
Then he said; We (apostles) have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
The scripture states 1 Corinthians 2:13 that the Holy Ghost will teach us by comparing spiritual things (scriptures) with spiritual. Also, in 2 Corinthians 13:1 tells us that every word must be established by two or three witnesses.
The Rule Of Interpretation. A. No private interpretation of the scriptures. B. Holy Ghost is the teacher comparing scripture with scripture. C. Ever essential doctrine must be established by two or three scriptures.
In part two of Rightly dividing the Word of Truth, we will explore more scriptures on this subject. So, stay tuned and we welcome your comments and feedback.
